The Pittsburgh New Church is a Christian organization dedicated to the worship of the Lord Jesus Christ in His Divine Human as revealed in the Writings for the New Church. Our mission is to cooperate with the Lord in building His New Church in the hearts, minds, and lives of the people of Southwestern Pennsylvania. We are part of the General Church of the New Jerusalem, a world-wide organization supporting the growth of the New Church everywhere.
While we call ourselves the New Church, we’re not really all that new anymore. The first New Church organizations started in England in the late 18th century and we’ve been organized in Pittsburgh since the early 19th century.
The New Church is based on the Old and New Testaments and the Writings for the New Church, a series of theological works written by Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg was an 18th century scientist and philosopher noted for many secular achievements throughout his life. During the second half of his life, Swedenborg was called by the Lord to observe, appreciate, and publish books about the spiritual world and the spiritual life. He wrote over 30 books about the nature of heaven and hell, the inner meaning of all the stories of the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, and many other ideas.
Our church community is based on the idea that useful service is central to the life of religion. For this reason, you will always find plenty of volunteers at every function helping out in every way, from leading discussion classes to putting chairs away afterward. Serving the Lord and our neighbors is how we live our religion.
